“CSF MTBR-tau243 is a specific biomarker of tau tangle pathology in Alzheimer’s disease.”
Kanta Horie, et al. – Washington University School of Medicine, Lund University.
This study found that MTBR-tau243 serves as a CSF biomarker that reflects the buildup of insoluble tau aggregates in the brain. This is in contrast to traditional CSF markers such as tau phosphorylated at specific residues, which better correlate with the buildup of amyloid than of tau.
The identification of MTBR-tau243 as a tau-specific biomarker enabled this group to develop an AD staging system based on fluid biomarkers.
